I love teasing Crossfitters, vegans, and yoga fanatics for the same thing, but this is spot on.

I miss the time when Crossfit was not yet a fad, it was still mostly just weird, hardcore guys working out in their basements and carports like some kind of Fitness Fight Club. And people were amazed and confused. And then suddenly a bunch of soccer moms wanted to pay $200/mo to join a gym and now it's a joke. Yeah, I'm jealous I wrote it off and didn't open a gym.

Dammit, now I want pudding.

And it’s true, there’s really no practical reason for anyone to drive a car with a clutch pedal anymore. Modern automatics will be more efficient than you on the street, and modern DCTs will be faster than you on the track.

I say this with all the love in the world for my six speed, but the only halfway practical reason that comes to mind is in case you end up in Europe you’ll have more rental car options.

Don’t let a washing machine decide when you should stop washing your clothes and begin rinsing. Be a man and wash your clothes in the river on some Pocahontas shiz.

I often times use my wipers in manual mode. I just push the stalk forward for one swipe every once in a while because the slow speed is too much for the light rain and I don’t feel like turning it on and off.

Either spelling can be used wherever you are. It’s like lodgement. Or lodgment, as desired. Except that my spell checker doesn’t like the latter.

Nah, I love my manual and will teach anyone wanting to learn - it’s just fuckin’ cool to drive a sloppy old truck with a sloppy old V8 and a shift throw so long it takes someone in the passenger seat to reach the top gears - but I ain’t gonna foist it on anyone. You drive automatic? That’s cool, I hear Hellcats and Corvettes are faster with automatics. That’s pretty neat, and ZF makes one hell of a conventional autobox that I can’t hold a candle to. Also if you’re gonna be distracted by a Double-Double and a pack of Timbits, I’d rather not throw another pedal and a wiggle-waggle in the mix.

Driving stick is fun and, when I was learning, it was a necessary skill. If I could drive stick, I could drive the tractor. Or move a tractor-trailer out of the way at least, if not move it down the road a bit. These days, it’s not such a big deal. Your tractor-trailers have, what, 15 speed automatics and who the fuck drives a tractor any more? Well my skill may look quaint and antiquated but I have fun with it and that’s what matters.

“there’s really no practical reason for anyone to drive a car with a clutch pedal anymore.”

-Less likely to get stolen

-Better real world fuel economy

-Needs less service

-Costs less to fix if it breaks

-More fun for people who enjoy driving rather than merely driving to get from point A to point B.

1) it works just as well

2) it lasts about 5x longer (5-6 months per application)

So it’s better.

That was pretty good. But that guy should really get a car with a stick-shift. It’s not that I think he should do that to escape censure or anything, he’d just enjoy it more. Maybe.

Sure, somewhat less likely that thieves will be able to drive the car. On the flip side, anyone you actually want to drive the car will need to know how to drive stick.

Better real world fuel economy? Versus a good modern automatic? You’ll have to convince me of that one.

Less service / cheaper to fix? Again, convince me. You’re also adding the clutch as a wear item, especially if the manual is being recommended to someone who has only driven automatics.

More fun? I certainly think so. That’s why all my cars have had clutch pedals. I’m not saying manual is a bad choice. I’m saying automatics used to be crap enough that I could legitimately say the manual was the better option regardless. These days, if someone asks me why they should buy a manual, my answer is simply for the enjoyment of driving it. That’s a good reason, and it’s why every car I’ve owned has had a clutch pedal (though I think a good dual clutch would be a fun option, as long as I still have one car with three pedals).
